The practice is located at Pakiri just north of Warkworth.
ACUPUNCTURE AND TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE
Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine is over 2500 years old. It is now used in almost every country in the world. Refer WHO website for list of diseases symptoms for which acupuncture can be an effective treatment.
WHAT TO EXPECT IN AN ACUPUNCTURE TREATMENT
How long does it take?
The first treatment and consultation takes approx 1 hour. In this time a full history of your health and wellbeing will be taken so that a Chinese Medical diagnosis and treatment plan can be formulated. Subsequent treatments will take 30 – 45 minutes.
How long are the needles left in?
The needles are left in for 15 to 20 minutes except in the case of small children and babies where they are only left in briefly.
Are the needles painful?
Because the needles are so fine (not much thicker than a human hair) there is very little, if any discomfort. You may experience a heavy sensation around the needle or a slight tingling after insertion. The treatment is very relaxing and you may even fall asleep.
Is anything put in or on the needles?
No the needles are not hollow and consist simply of a solid stainless steel shaft with a slightly thicker handle. Nothing is injected through the needle
At times the needles mey be warmed and this is done by lighting a small cone of moxa ( a herbal heat treatment) that sits firmly on the top of needle and gently warms the needle and area around it. This is a very pleasant sensation.
At times also a small electric current may be attached to the ends of the needle which causes a mild tingling or pulsation which helps with pain relief and normalising muscle function.
What should I wear when I come for a treatment?
Comfortable loose clothing is preferable. If points on the torso are used you may be required to remove some items of clothing and in this case gowns are provided and blankets used to keep you warm and covered during your treatment.
Do’s and don’t after acupuncture treatment
Particularly after the first treatment it is beneficial for you to have a fairly quiet time. Normal daily activities are fine but avoid over exertion for 48 hours. Subsequent treatments you should take it easy for 24 hours. It is best not to shower or bathe for 2 hours after your treatment.
